Myth: A majority of Americans believe that the United States was founded as a Christian nation.
Fact: The First Amendment of the Constitution explicitly forbids the establishment of any religion.

There’s no question that most Americans identify as Christian, but when did we lose faith in a pluralistic society? Many today now believe that the Founders intended the United States to be a Christian nation and that “real Americans” and Christians are under siege. Many feel that liberals and atheists are somehow denying and erasing a Christian heritage, while Islam is threatening to upend the Constitution and our system of justice. Why do so many think these things?

At Civics Nation, we believe in a pluralistic society that holds no faith to be superior to another, so that we can coexist in peace.
